Obituary of Billie Leonard Polk

Billie Leonard “Len” Polk, 72 was born on May 23, 1949, and passed away on June 11, 2021, at the VA Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. Len was a Denver native, raised in the Whittier area and attended Denver Public Schools. As a child, Len enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. At the age of 17, Len enlisted in the US Army and served his country in the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Fort Carson, Colorado and received the following medals: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/5 Bronze Service Stars and Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device. On one of his leaves, Len met and married Flossie M. Miles. After serving a four-year term and receiving an honorable discharge from the US Army, Len focused on providing for his family and worked at Children’s Hospital cleaning operating rooms and eventually settled on a long career as a Facility Manager in the Denver Public Schools District. After he retired from DPS, he later joined the Cherry Creek Schools District as a Facility Manager. He retired a second and final time and started enjoying what he loved the most, spending time with family and friends. He loved traveling, playing cards (Poker, Tonk, Spades), dominoes, going to “The Hills” (Central City and Black Hawk) and finally, fishing. He will always be remembered for his favorite drink (Windsor Canadian Whisky). He would say “make me a 50/50”. In addition to his humor, willingness to help others and the love he had for his family. Len “Uncle Leonard” is survived by 3 children: Regina Green, Billie (Don) Upshaw and Michele (Nathaniel) Howard, wife Flossie Polk, 5 siblings: Ronald (Janet) Polk, Ernie (Leslie) Polk, Harry (Barbara) Polk, Loretta (Jerry) Smallwood and Gary (Phylicia) Polk, 4 grandchildren: Arriel Upshaw, Nat Green, Marcellous and Leyla Hassien, and beloved companion Leticia Ross and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Len was preceded in death by his parents Fredrick and Cordilla Polk and brothers Fredrick “Freddy” and Robert “Bobby” Polk.
