Debra Sue Morris Obituary

The sun rose on the life of Debra Sue Morris on October 21, 1953, in New Albany, Indiana when she was born to Oscar Johnson and Beulah Nance Sumrall. Debra had five brothers, Gary, Oscar Jr., Grady, Matthew and William “Billy”, and eight sisters, Velma, Doris, Virginia, Patricia, Constance, Dena, Vikki and Katherine. As a child, she was always quiet and meek and loved to play outside. She was a tomboy who would try to hang out with her brothers, Gary and Oscar until they would chase her away.

Educated in the public school system, Debra graduated from Central High School in Pueblo. Colorado. She later attended the University of Maryland where she earned her associate degree in Bookkeeping and Accounting.

Debra met Michael Morris in 1970 and on February 23, 1971, they were united in marriage at the courthouse in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The marriage consisted of them traveling around the world due to the military life for 21 years which Michael served, many concerts, fishing, gardening and remodeling their home together. She was the proud and loving mother of Maurice, Charlamar and Eric, whom she loved and cared for dearly.

Debra was later blessed with six granddaughters, Alissia, Ajanae, Brandi, Shantell, Arianna and Phoenix, and eleven great-grandchildren who all called her “Grandma”. The grandchildren remember her great sense of humor, how she would put them on her feet and dance, the holidays and her cooking big meals. She was blunt and straight to the point, but she always did it out of love.

Debra was very devoted to the Holy Bible and God’s work all her life, where she enjoyed serving and helping those in need.

Her profession was in Bookkeeping and Accounting where she was employed with I.T.I. in Rolla, Missouri for 5 years. Debra also worked for the Federal Government before retiring in 2013. She owned and operated her own childcare center at home for 8 years in Columbia, South Carolina and Ansbach, Germany. Her former coworkers will forever cherish her for always going above and beyond and being a very gracious woman.

In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, sewing, decorating, and fishing. Debra had many lifelong friends from all around the world who will forever remember her fun spirit, cooking, fun parties, BBQ’s and decorating skills.

Her favorite colors were black, blue and earth tones, she loved roses and house plants, and the sounds of gospel and R&B music. She was a master in the kitchen and loved to dance. She was the greatest wife, mother, and grandmother that God blessed her family with. She was truly the glue to the Morris clan.

This sweet, kind, caring, fun and loving lady will be deeply missed. To know Debra was to love her.

The sun set on the life of Debra Sue Morris on July 24, 2025, in Aurora, Colorado when she passed from this life into her eternal rest.

She is preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, Grady Sumrall, Sr., siblings, Oscar Jr., Gary, William Johnson, Joyce Reed and Patricia Simpson along with many other relatives that were loved and never forgotten.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 53 years Michael Morris; children, Maurice Morris, Eric (Gina) Morris and Charlamar Morris-Eisom; siblings, Velma Augustus, Doris Meeks, Virgina and Vikki Johnson, Dena Rorex, Constance and Katherine Sumrall, Matthew Ash and Grady Sumrall, Jr.; 6 granddaughters, 11 great grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
