The sun rose on the life of Will T. Jones on August 2, 1941, in Mississippi when he was born to Rev. Albert Lee and Pearlean Torry Jones. Will had three brothers, Forrest, James and Abb, and two sisters, Essie and Mattie. He was also blessed to have some half-siblings which included, Thelma, Alice, Beatrice, Katie, Luada, Rembert, Richard, Avery, Leon, Martin, Sam, Early and Abraham.
Will received his education in the public school system where he graduated from High School. He continued with his studies by attending California State University in Hayward, California where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Mass Communications.
He later enlisted in the United States Air Force from September 20, 1960, until June 26, 1964, and was stationed in Vietnam and Amarillo, Texas. His final rank was an Airman First Class.
Will met Donna Schooler in Amarillo and in 1963 they were united in marriage at a family members’ home. The marriage consisted of him being kind and a meticulous gentleman, talking trash and dedicated to always helping people. He was later blessed with his daughter, Felisa.
His daughter remembers how he loved playing cards and poker, and how he taught her to play them both at the age of seven. He was later blessed with his grandchildren, Brandon and Cameron who called him “Grandpa” and remember how he was mellow, chill, and a little mysterious but enjoyed the road trips and time at the park.
Will was a member of the National Association of Black Journalists for 25 years where he served as a founding member and as Vice President.
By profession, he was an Investigate Journalist for St. Croix Avis. He also worked as a Lead Reporter for 11 years with the Oakland Tribune. His coworkers remember him being diligent and hard-working.
In his free time, he enjoyed watching the news, baseball and playing cards. His best friends, Melvin Claxton and John Burris will forever cherish his talking trash, playing cards and his love for journalism.
Will truly enjoyed listening to the sounds of jazz music and will forever be remembered for his kind and giving nature.
This compassionate, intellectual, caring and family-oriented man will be deeply missed. To know Will was to love him.
