Carolyn Jean Barnes Obituary

Carolyn Jean Lindsey Barnes, beloved daughter of the late Robert and Catherine Lindsey, was born on August 31, 1943, in Wilson County, North Carolina. She peacefully departed this life on Sunday, December 21, 2025. Affectionately known as Jean, she was reared in Elm City, North Carolina, where she received her education in the Wilson County School System. She was a proud graduate of Frederick Douglass High School, Class of 1960, and remained a devoted member of its alumni.

Jean confessed her faith in Christ at an early age and united with William Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. She has maintained a lifelong belief in the power and love of God, and her life was reflective of God’s love in action. She was always active in her church life, and as a founding member of Restoration Christian Fellowship, a servant in many capacities at Lowry Community Christian Church, and an usher & choir member at Chapel 1 on Lowry, she was always sharing the power of God’s love and his word.

On February 12, 1963, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Johnnie C. Barnes, and from this union four children were born. With her husband being enlisted in the Army early on, it afforded her the ability to travel & experience life in new places, both overseas & in the US – often choosing to work on the military bases, as well. She worked in the military housing office in multiple positions on Fitzsimons, multiple positions on Lowry AFB, and in Human Resources in the Surgeon General’s office at the Air Reserve Personnel Center on Buckley AFB, where she retired in February of 2014. She enjoyed trying new things and took up a hobby of making porcelain dolls, even entering them in competitions and winning. She loved music & sang in the church choir at Chapel 1 on Lowry AFB & was on the very first music album the church completed & put out. She took up bowling & bowled in a league w/ her husband for many years. She loved to garden & always kept a garden plot on the military base, until she eventually had her husband build her one in their back yard. She would always tell people to stop by & get them some greens (so they could go clean & cook them themselves). And she really loved to cook! She also liked to dance & would def be down to cut a rug when the moment presented itself. And in her later years, she loved to travel back to NC w/ her daughter Katrina, to attend alumni functions, reunions, and to be surrounded by friends & family.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by her brother, Franklin Lindsey, and her son, Jerry Barnes. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her children: Derryl Barnes (Sharon) of Aurora, Colorado; Kimberly Barnes of Aurora, Colorado; and Katrina Barnes of the home; five grandchildren: Natashya, Erica, Treyvon, Kianna, & Jali; and five great-grandchildren: Christopher, Jacari, Kayden, Noelani, & Amira. She is also survived by her sisters: Bettye Tyson (Hubert) of Stantonsburg, North Carolina; Evelyn Lucas of Wilson, North Carolina; Judy Taybron (Lester) of Wilson, North Carolina; and Eunice Lindsey of Elm City, North Carolina; one brother, Robert Lindsey (Pamela) of Elm City, North Carolina; one uncle, Fred White (Thelma) of Durham, North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
