Ok I am finally at a place where I can post this. Last week my grandmother unexpectedly passed away. It was not at all how or when we thought she would go, we were not given a chance to say goodbye, to hold her hand and guide her on to her next journey. This has been incredibly difficult for my family and me as my grandmother was the matriarch of our family. She had 12 brothers and sisters and spent her entire life taking care of her loved ones. And while I could not say goodbye I am so glad that I took the time to memorize the lines in her face, the smell of her perfume, I know exactly which rings she wore on which fingers and which of her necklaces she never took off. I remember her brand of cigarettes and I remember when she asked for a "pop" she specifically meant a pineapple flavored soda. I will never forget that it is because of her that I went to music school, because when I was a little girl she said exactly what I needed to hear to light a fire within me that will never die. I love you Granny. Rest in peace.
