Obituary of Mother Laura Alexander
Please share a memory of Mother to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
The sun rose on the life of Mother Laura Annie Alexander on December 4, 1934 in Akron, Colorado when she was born to John and Lillie Sherman. She had nine brothers, John, Jr., Cleon, Robert Lee, James, George, Steve, Eugene, Charles and Edward and two sisters, Lillie and Carrie. The family relocated to Boulder, Colorado when Laura was five years old.
Educated in the public school system, she attended school in Boulder until she moved to Denver to live with her brother, James and his wife Eldora "Dody" Sherman. Then she attended East High School in Denver, where she graduated. During high school, Laura worked at various small part time jobs. In 1952, Laura was united in marriage with Floyd Alexander after a long corresponding relationship. Floyd asked her strict father for her hand in marriage.
Mr. Sherman said yes and to make sure to take good care of Laura, which he did. To this union were born seven wonderful children, Garry, Ruby, Stephen, Floyd, Jr., JoAnn, David and Lloyd. A devoted wife and loving mother, she was always there to guide, help and comfort her children. In later years, her twenty-two grandchildren, forty great grandchildren and her two great great grandchildren were a special source of joy and pride in her life. They loved her dearly as she did them. She devoted all of her time in those family growth years to caring for her family and home, leaving her jobs.
A woman of faith, Laura attended services at Second Baptist Church in Boulder. After relocating to Denver, she attended Union Baptist Church. In later years, she became a member of Miracle Mountain A.M.E. Zion Church where she served on the Trustee Board.
