Julia Verdean Smith was born on June 15, 1937 in Zion (Crescent), Oklahoma. She was the 9th child out of 11 children born to Alexander and Marvella Holmes Smith. She was surrounded by her sisters, Maggie, Opal and Velma, and her brothers John “Bo”, Noomis, Benny, Roy, Glenn, Alexander “Elic” and William “Bill”. Verdean received her formal education in Dover, Oklahoma and graduated from Booker T High School. Later she would attend college in Wichita, Kansas. Later Verdean moved to Denver, Colorado where her brothers Noomis and Roy were. Verdean was a woman, who when she set her mind to do something she did it.
