When I first started with ViaWest I had come from a few different jobs where managers were more like faceless entities that would only provide bad news, and getting called to their office meant you were in trouble or someone was being investigated. This cultured a fear of management and bosses in me strong enough to make me fearful of Chris when I first started to work for him. There was something different though. I have to laugh looking back on it, knowing him as I do now.
Chris worked at it slowly, trying to joke with me and get me to open up to him. When he saw something in someone that was worth inspiring and growing, he was nothing if not persistent. Eventually I opened up to Chris regarding my fear of management. He made it a point to try to work with me more, to not be a faceless individual and to provide positive and constructive criticism.
Chris continued to push me from that point forward to do better, to work harder, to try to live up to the potential he saw in me. Chris really felt like a second father to me and I'll never forget his encouragement and dedication. For me, Chris was the Ideal Mentor. He was always there with a shoulder to cry on, a joke to lighten the mood, or the right thing to say to get you past what was going on.
