The sun rose on the life of Alice Fay Kennard on December 12, 1935, in Alice, Texas when she was born to Napoleon Cain and Roxie Alexander. She was the youngest out of three children born to this union. Alice had one brother, Napoleon Curtis, and one sister, Verma Lee Moore. As a child, she was always dancing for everyone, pulling and chopping cotton. Her family were also sharecroppers.
Educated in the public school system, Alice graduated from Dunbar High School in Lubbock, Texas. She later attended college in Denver, Colorado where she received her Certified Nursing Assistance license (CNA).
Alice met Minor Kennard in Lubbock where they both just happen to be working in a nursing home. They were later united in marriage in Denver, Colorado. The marriage consisted of them traveling a lot together. They soon welcomed a son, Minor Jr. Alice was also the proud and loving mother of Dwight, Mickey, and Jerome, whom she loved all dearly just as much as they did her.
Alice was an active member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Henry Miles where she served on the Pastor’s Anniversary Committee and the Financial Building Committee. Alice also started the Black History Celebration among other things there at the church.
By profession, she was a CNA and became one of the starters of the Juneteenth and Black Arts Festival festivities. Her coworkers remember her being very enjoyable to work with and never meeting a stranger. She worked a lot in the political field and even worked with the Hiawatha Davis Recreation Center formally known as Skyland Recreation Center.
In her free time, she enjoyed meeting people and enjoying life. She will forever be remembered for her love of Pepsi, hog head cheese, and her brisket.
Her favorite color was purple, she loved the flower roses, and the sounds of R&B, gospel, and blues music.
This sweet, loving, kind, caring, God-fearing and beautiful lady will be deeply missed. To know Alice was to love her.
