Obituary of Alma Hill

The sun rose on the life of Mrs. Alma Jewel Hill on May 20, 1931,in Hallsville, Texas, when she was born to Cornelius Johnson and Rosie Ballard. The ninth of twelve children, Alma had five brothers,James, Roy, Leon, Mandell and Milton and six sisters, Neffie, L.A.,Earnie, Ollie, Lilly and Mary. A happy child, Alma loved picking blackberries and sitting on the high porch. She always remembered climbing onto her mom's high bed with her mother and siblings and her very first airplane ride. Alma completed her high school education and graduated from Friendship Public School in Hallsville, TX.On October 3, 1948, Alma was united in marriage with Oscar Mayfield Hill, Sr. The couple exchanged their vows in Harrison County, TX between two oak trees. She loved her husband. He was a great provider, father and husband. To this union were born 10children, Betty, Oscar, Leon, Frank, Rosetta, Larry, Wendylon,Rosie, Marion and Jewel. The children remember, "We all loved our mom and knew that she would be there for us no matter what." Alma's grandchildren affectionately called her "Grandma" or "Madear" and loved going to her house.A woman of deep faith in God, Alma was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church for many years, where she was the secretary and taught Sunday School. When Alma worked outside her home, she was a housekeeper and was known for being dedicated and friendly. In her free time, she enjoyed family and friends, travel and raising her grandchildren. Her friends remember her for always speaking her mind, and being warm and caring. "She was a strong willed woman who would assist anyone and everyone who was in need. She was a believer in the Lord in healing and she never gave up." Her favorite color was red and she enjoyed many types of music; gospel,R&B, blues and modern. "She will be missed dearly but will be in our hearts and thoughts every day of our lives. She was the best mom that anyone could ask for."The sun set on the life of Mrs. Alma Jewel Hill on January 11, 2014 when the Lord called her home to eternal rest. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband,two children, Oscar Jr. and Betty Sue; granddaughter, Essence; four brothers and four sisters. Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Leon (Learsey) Hill of Denver, CO, Larry (Patricia) Hill of Aurora, CO and Frank (Cathy) Hill of Houston, TX; daughters, Rosetta (Larry) Jones, Wendylon Hill, Rosie Hill, Marion(Roger) Bynoe and Jewel Hill, all of Aurora, CO; brother,Mandell Jones of Denver, CO; sisters, Lillie McDowell of Aurora, CO and Mary LaPointe of Seattle, WA; 27 grandchildren;27 great grandchildren;and a host of nieces,nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
