Obituary of Joel Spiller

Please share a memory of Joel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joel David Spiller Sr. was born December 18, 1956 to proud parents, Cornelius J. and Pearl B. Spiller. Joe was an only child. In his words, "That had its good and bad points". That meant he had to do all the chores alone, but he got to reap all the benefits of not having to share the goods. Sometimes it was lonely for him so he spent a lot of time seeing what "grown folks" do. This made him grow to not like fishing or bingo which his mother loved; His father was a transporter on the railroad so Joe got to travel a lot, mostly to Texas to see his relatives. Joe began his walk with God at Scott Union Methodist Church at an early age. Joe attended Thomas Jefferson in the Denver Public School system, where he got his first job and graduated from. At 18 years old, Joe joined the U. S. Army. His mother was not happy about this but supported him anyway. While in the military he became a Gas Tank Driver (so began his love for driving). While in Germany, he met his future wife, Theresa Shaw. Her father was one of his commanding officers. After his tour was up, he returned home and married Theresa in 1979. To this union was born two children, Jacqueline Re'nee and Joel David Jr. In 1986, Joe met and began a new life journey with Gloria Hendricks. In the relationship he inherited her two daughters, Antoinette Marie and Charli Deann. In 1990 he was reunited with his children and the house became a family of four kids; not counting all the children we picked up along the way. Joe was a hard and willing worker; he would work at Pipkin Mortuary in the day and the airport at night. Our family took on another role and we became grandparents. So he settled in working just one job at Kwal Paints as a driver delivering paint. Joe worked a number of jobs during his life time, but his last 12 years was spent with Denver Public Schools Archuleta (coincidentally where he started working in his youth). Joel and his mother in-law Elnora Zackery were close during the 28.5 years with Gloria, (oh yea we did wed in 1999). They rode around shopping and visiting friends most of the time. He will truly be missed. Joe became close friends with Harold his brother-in-law. His devoted friend of many years was Terry Juniel. Joe is preceded in death by his parents Cornelius and Pearl Spiller and his daughter Charli Hendricks. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Gloria J. Spiller; son, Joel D. Spiller Jr.: daughters, Jacqueline R. Spiller and Antoinette Hendricks; grandchildren, Joseph L. Leflore, Jeramyah D. LeGrand, Nalini Spiller, De'Ja Hendricks (Michael Marshall), De'Jon CJ Johnston & Terell Hughes; great grand- child, Mia Marshall; aunt, Tomiscan "Teen" McCray almost 99 years of age; cousin, Faye, both of San Bernardino, CA and a host of family and friends. Rest in peace...Joe
