Obituary of Connie Mack Smith
Please share a memory of Connie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
The sun rose on the life of Mr. Connie Mack Smith on September 16, 1938 in Bryan, Texas when he was born the only child of Lorraine Johnson. He was reared by his loving grandparents, Reverend Joseph Sr. and Mrs. Mary Johnson. Connie was the oldest grandchild and he grew up in the same household with his aunts and uncles. He was accepted as their "baby brother." Connie was a beautiful and happy child and had long curly locks of hair. He was always curious about "how things work" and he loved to dress up. His youngest uncle, Albert, became jealous of him because he thought Connie received too much attention. Educated in the public school system, he graduated from Navasota High School in Navasota, TX In 1957, Connie relocated to Denver, Colorado seeking better employment opportunities. On February 20, 1960, Connie united in holy matrimony to Lillie M. Hill at Union Baptist Church in Denver. She remembers, "We worked hard to purchase a home. He enjoyed my cooking. We were best friends and could talk to each other about anything." The marriage was later dissolved, but they remained the best of friends. A man of faith, he accepted Christ at an early age and united with Bethel Grove Baptist Church under the pastorship of his grandfather, Reverend Joseph Johnson, Sr. From an early age Connie learned about the love of God and family and he grew up to become a humble, kind and well mannered man. Most recently, Connie became a member of Greater Union Baptist Church, where Reverend Gregory Johnson served as his pastor. He especially enjoyed picking up his mother-in-law, Mrs. Juanita Hill, and driving her to church on Sunday mornings. He truly enjoyed his walk with the Lord and sharing with his new church family. By profession, Connie worked as a butcher at National Foods Packing House. He was highly respected and worked well with everyone. In his free time, Connie enjoyed cook-outs, basketball, baseball, football, fishing and spending quality with his family and friends. This kind, loving, thoughtful and considerate man was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. The sun set on the life of Mr. Connie Mack Smith "Hammer Head" on October 30, 2014 when he departed this life to the embrace of the Lord. He is preceded in death by his grandparents who raised him, Rev. Reverend Joseph Sr. and Mrs. Mary Johnson. Those left to cherish his memory include his former wife and devoted friend, Lillie Smith of Denver, CO; uncles, Joseph (Alma) Johnson, Jr. of Denver, CO and Albert (Lillie) Johnson of Houston, TX; aunt, Birdie Ayers of Caldwell, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Rest in peace...Connie
